Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures
School starts at 8:30am and ends at 3:15pm. It is helpful to drop off on-time so all students start the day together. If you are going to be more than 15 minutes late for either drop-off or pick-up, please call or text at 703-407-7193.
The Newton School has a carpool system so that children can safely and efficiently be dropped off and pick-up each day. The following details this process:
Parents should drive into the Loudoun Commerce Center from Nokes Boulevard and immediately turn right at the T.
Parents should then turn at the first left (south) and go around to the rear of our building (# 45965). At the back of the building, turn right and turn right again at the corner.
Parents should begin to form a line of cars in front of the building, parallel to the front doors. The spaces in front of the building are marked so that no vehicles may park in these spots.
At 8:30am, a faculty member will open the doors and assist students into the school.
At 3:15pm, a faculty member will walk your child from the lobby to your car. The adult picking up the child must be on the previously provided list of adults designated for pick-up, or the child will not be released.
If a parent chooses to not participate in carpool, the parent may only park on the west side of the building in the designated parking spaces, and must walk their child to the front door on the sidewalks. The procedure is required so that the child only walks on the sidewalk and does not walk in the parking lot or street.
Lunch and Snacks
The Newton School prefers healthy eating at school. We do allow nuts and peanut butter. Each child is to bring in a lunch and two snacks. Please be sure to label all plastic containers that you send to school. If your child participates in one of the after school activities, snack will be provided. We provide all students their own water bottle to use at school with the water that we provide.
The Newton School is excited to introduce a lunch delivery option from Cafesano Italian and Mediterranean Bistro and Chick-fil-A! Cafesano regular meals are $7.50/meal with a larger or gluten free option at $8.50/meal. Chick-fil-A meals are $9.75/meal. Students may order a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in advance as well. A sample menu and more details can be found here.
If you have questions on the lunch delivery, please email Karen Billingslea, our Manager of Special Projects, at kbillingsleas@thenewtonschool.org.
School Closing & Inclement Weather
In general, The Newton School follows Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) when determining early dismissals, delayed openings, and closures due to inclement weather. However, there are times when The Newton School will deem it appropriate to deviate from the standard policy and make independent decisions. These instances will be based on the unique circumstances of a particular weather event and its impact on our students and their families. Examples include early dismissals or when low temperatures are the primary reason that Fairfax County decides to close school. All decisions are communicated via email and text messages, and are posted at WTOP.
Student Illness Policy
If your child is sick, please do not send them to school. Our program requires significant physical activity and the day will be challenging for them. If your child has had a fever, a student need fever-free for 24 hours before he or she return to school. If your child has a contagious illness such as pink eye or mono, we will likely request a doctor’s note to ensure they are no longer spreading the illness to other students.
Uniforms
The Newton School has a uniform policy for all students. Our uniform clothing consists of the following:
Red or cobalt blue shirt – This can be short or long sleeves, with or without collar, with or without a New School logo.
Pants are red, cobalt or navy-blue sweatpants or leggings, or navy blue or tan regular chino cotton pants.
Dresses, skorts, skirts – all navy blue or red.
Shorts – long athlete shorts in red or cobalt only, regular cotton chino shorts in navy only.
These are all available from Lands End. We do allow other providers if they comply exactly with what is stated above. This means plain (no other logos or other decorations), similar material and exactly style.
Students are allowed to wear their own sweatshirts, socks, coats and backpacks.
Children may wear red or cobalt color shirts (there are no navy shirts) in combination with other clothing from the approved catalog of clothing. The Newton School logo on clothing is optional. We do ask that you mark all items with your child’s name on the tag since all the clothes look alike.
